Toughened glass is heat-treated to be several times stronger than ordinary glass, and if broken it crumbles into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards - which is why it's the standard for doors, partitions, railings and facades.

What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat-strengthened and crumbles safely when broken; laminated glass bonds two glass sheets with an interlayer so it holds together when cracked. Laminated is used for overhead, security and acoustic needs; the two are often combined.
